Where Hospitality Ends, Security Begins.
Defender One brings consistency & hospitality-minded security to a busy, multi-use venue.Case Study: Conrad’s Ruth Villa
For generations, Conrad’s Ruth Villa has been where Maryland families come together. This fourth-generation waterfront catering venue in Middle River hosts 20,000 to 30,000 guests a year for weddings, crab feasts, trade events, and family gatherings. Its loyalty is remarkable: more than 90 percent of its clients have been coming back for 20 years or more.
That kind of loyalty is built on hospitality. But as Conrad’s grew, owner David Conrad recognized that hospitality alone could no longer carry the full weight of keeping guests safe.
When Relationships Alone Aren’t Enough
For decades, entry and exit at Conrad’s ran on relationships, not rules. The approach was simple: accommodate guests, stay flexible, and work it out as you go.
As the venue’s guest list and event types expanded, that approach needed more structure. Entry and exit now involve far more than managing a guest list. Dietary and religious meal requests, lawful weapon carry considerations, and restricted items have added a level of complexity that goes beyond the traditional role of hospitality staff.
Built for Hospitality, Not Conflict
Trying to stay flexible for longtime clients, without a clear policy or someone equipped to enforce it, put more pressure on the people running the business, not less.
Custom Security Guidelines, Not a Generic Script
Defender One didn’t arrive with a one-size-fits-all playbook. Our team worked alongside Conrad’s to build the guidelines the venue actually needed, drawing on years of experience managing security at similar venues and the law enforcement background of Defender One’s leadership.
The result has been well received. Both repeat and new clients have responded positively to the added security, and guests have found that it hasn’t come at the cost of the welcoming atmosphere Conrad’s is known for.
“I liked that Defender One is selective of who they work with and that they had a diverse client roster. They protect hospitals and community centers, not the downtown bar scene. If they are going to take us on, they intend to do it well.”
A Security Plan That Keeps Improving
The work doesn’t stop at a set of rules. After each event, Conrad’s and Defender One discuss opportunities to further protect guests and enhance the event experience. This ongoing review keeps our guards constantly identifying potential issues, so they can be proactive instead of reactive.
What This Means for Your Venue
Conrad’s Ruth Villa’s experience isn’t really about Conrad’s Ruth Villa. It’s about what happens when a business built on hospitality recognizes where hospitality ends and a different kind of expertise needs to take over.
The right guidelines, built by people who know how to ask the right questions, protect both your guests and the reputation you’ve spent generations building.
Your Venue Deserves Guards Held to a Higher Standard.
With more than 30 years of law enforcement experience behind our approach, we hold every site we protect to the same standard we’d demand anywhere else. Rigorous recruiting, site-specific post orders, and leadership that stays involved long after the contract is signed.
